By 2020, there will be 6.1 billion smartphone users worldwide

The number of smartphone users in emerging markets is growing thanks to less expensive devices, breaking down one of the major barriers to Internet connectivity. This is especially true in India. Last September, JIVI Mobiles launched their Jivi JSP 20 at the minimum price of $31 USD. The Jivi JSP 20 is reflective of a much larger trend happening in emerging markets. Large, established mobile manufacturers are losing a share of the market to local brands. The minimum cost of a smartphone has decreased by more than half since 2013. The cost of a phone itself is no longer the gatekeeper to connection that it once was.

Smartphone Usage Growth Statistics

Phone in hand, but no connection

85% of people in emerging markets are on pay-as-you-go mobile subscriptions, and the high-cost of data discourages many users from downloading apps on their smartphones. In India, 20% of smartphone users top-up their data plans daily. In the Philippines and Nigeria, 60% and 56% of users top-up daily, respectively. Because they're buying the smallest packages of data they can afford, they miss out on the cost savings of purchasing larger ones.

When you look at the cost of a 500 MB mobile data plan in relation to income, it’s pretty clear to see why 50% of smartphone users in India deactivate their data plans. The number of hours minimum-wage workers in India, Indonesia, and Brazil need to work to afford simple actions such as downloading a song or watching a YouTube video is staggering.

High Data Costs

These users have inexpensive access to their first connected device, yet the high cost of data discourages them from using their new phone to its full potential. No data=no apps. The data trap prevents many users from discovering, downloading, and using apps that could enrich their lives.
